Chapter Fourteen

The next few days are filled with peace. Even though the island is treacherous and cold, I can’t remember feeling more comfortable anywhere else. It’s because of him.

Everything is new and exciting. I’m happy. I realize I’ve never felt this way before. I was never this happy on Earth. Never felt so intensely like I belonged. And it’s not the island that I belong on, it’s the man I belong to.

I want to be with him, no matter where we are. There’s something keeping him from his own happiness, though. I see worry in his eyes when he forgets to hide it. I see the tiny lines between his brows, the somberness in his face. And I think I know what he’s worried about.

The island isn’t safe for me, and he’s afraid the monsters will return. I don’t venture out near dark anymore. Long before the evening shadows start creeping over the land, I’m secure in our cabin with the fire blazing.

It’s not the best life for anyone, and we both understand that. I still think help will come, but when it does…what then? Will his people accept me? I don’t know.

I don’t really know anything about his life. And I don’t know what will become of me. But I know him, and I trust him. He’ll do what’s best for me. He won’t put me in harm’s way, and he won’t allow anyone to take me.

Part of me wishes we could stay here together forever, and part of me cannot wait to get to someplace warmer and more civilized. No one is meant to live for long on this awful stretch of land.

And even though he found the greens the day we arrived at the cabin, they seem scarce and it’s rare that he brings them to me. We have meat, but I crave the sweetness of an orange, the crispness of lettuce, the hotness of a freshly baked and buttered potato.

When I wake up early one morning, early enough so frost still covers the ground but the wind has stopped shrieking, I know Fix is gone before I even open my eyes. When he’s in bed with me, he is always curled around me.

Sometimes he slips from the bed and goes hunting. He’ll return with greens when he can find them and meat or fish every other time. Once, he returned with a raggedy bouquet of strange dull flowers and brought me to tears with his sweetness.

Usually, I snuggle under the covers and wait for him to return, but this time I stretch and then jump out of bed. He doesn’t seem to mind the cold, but it makes me ache all over.

A few days earlier he caught and smoked some fish, and I plan to go outside and grab a couple to cook up for his breakfast. If he’s not back by then, I’ll go explore a little. The daylight seems relatively safe—it’s when the sunlight begins to fade that danger sneaks in.

I dress and slip
